Atelier Cimabue used to be an old art workshop, an artist’s studio where works of art were created, right in front of the church that houses Cimabue’s Crucifix, one of Arezzo’s treasure troves of art dating from around 1268-1271.

Atelier Cimabue is located directly on Piazza San Domenico, one of the most picturesque corners of Arezzo. The square is dominated by the Basilica di San Domenico, a church whose construction was begun in 1275 and finished in the 14th century. Built in the Romanesque style, it was supported by funding from two noble Arezzo families of the time, the Ubertini and Tarlati families. In January 1276, the church, only partially completed, hosted what for the Church of Rome was the first conclave in history.
Inside is preserved one of the most precious works of medieval art history and one of the unmissable stops for those visiting Arezzo’s artistic heritage: the ‘Crucifix’ by Cenni di Pepo, better known as Cimabue.
The work, datable to 1265-71, is considered the youthful masterpiece of Giotto’s master, indicated by Giorgio Vasari as the first great innovator of western painting.
The Crucifix is approximately 340×270 cm in size and towers imposingly above the altar.

In addition, just a few steps away from the property is the Casa del Vasari, a historic residence built in the 16th century by the famous artist Giorgio Vasari. The house stands out for its elegant Renaissance architecture. Inside, you can admire original frescoes and artistic details that reflect Vasari’s creative genius. The property still retains the authentic atmosphere of the period, transporting visitors back in time. In addition to being a testament to Renaissance art and culture, the Casa del Vasari is a historical icon of Arezzo.
Giorgio Vasari, whose 450th anniversary of death was commemorated in 2024, decorated his home in Arezzo with extraordinary skill, using the fresco technique to create timeless works of art. With precise and vibrant brushstrokes, Vasari painted mythological, allegorical and historical scenes that adorn the walls of the residence. Through his skilful use of colour and detail, he brought characters and landscapes to life, conveying emotions and telling stories. His ability to blend perspective and light gives depth and realism to the frescoes, making the Casa del Vasari a unique artistic treasure.

No less important are the frescoes by Piero della Francesca in the Basilica of San Francesco and the Duomo, just a few hundred metres away.
If you arrive at Arezzo station, you can take a 1200 m walk through the historic centre (see map>), or take a public bus in front of the station (line B+ on the Via Spinello side in front of the newsstand) towards Via Tarlati, get off at Via Tarlati 14 and continue on foot for 200 m. Alternatively, you can take a taxi, which will take just a few minutes. You will find the taxi rank at the station.
